Cheney** backs Limbaugh over Powell
He says he'd rather back broadcaster in the battle over
future of the GOP
WASHINGTON - Dick
Cheney** made clear Sunday he'd rather follow firebrand broadcaster
Rush Limbaugh than former Joint Chiefs chairman Colin Powell into political
battle over the future of the Republican Party. Asked about recent verbal
broadsides between Limbaugh and Powell, Cheney said, "If I had to
choose in terms of being a Republican, I'd go with Rush Limbaugh."

Cheney: "We Weren't In Torture Business"
Objecting to the Obama administration's refusal to
use waterboarding and other interrogation procedures put into place by the
Bush administration, former vice president Dick Cheney said the policies
were part of "an intelligent interrogation program," and that
revoking them may cost American lives.
Unlike former President George W. Bush, who (like many of his predecessors)
has demurred from making public comments or criticisms about his successor
and his policies, Cheney has been vocal in his attacks on the new
president...
Asked about the hypocrisy of America employing
certain interrogation techniques — the suggestion that we have stooped to
becoming like our enemies — Cheney said he had no regrets about the Bush
administration authorizing their use. "I think it was absolutely the
right thing to do. I'm convinced, absolutely convinced, that we saved
thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands of lives."

Cheney’s Smirk Takes
Us to ‘Dark Side’ Again
As arguably the most powerful vice- president
in the history of the White House, Dick
Cheney did a lot of damage to the
image of the U.S. abroad.
What’s weird is that even now, without the power
or the office, he’s still at it, shamelessly undercutting the incumbent
president on sensitive issues of national security.
Maybe we should be grateful. How else would we be
reminded of the specious logic and mental contortions that prevailed during
the Bush administration?
Take the debate on torture. A majority
of Americans agree with President Barack
Obama that torture is wrong. Most
of us find it unacceptable that U.S. interrogators subjected prisoners,
however heinous their alleged crimes, to repeated waterboarding in violation
of international conventions, U.S. laws and our core values.
Then along comes Cheney, sounding like the old
Bolshevik Lenin, arguing that the ends justify the means. In Cheney’s interview
with Sean Hannity on Fox News on
April 20, he said torture should be allowed if it yields good intelligence.
Remember: This is the same man who in 2002, helped manipulate intelligence
to justify going to war.
So there we have it. In the world
according to Cheney, good information is worth any price -- including
torture -- provided it gives cover for what he wanted to do anyway: In 2002,
it was to invade Iraq.
Button it, Dick.

“Bad Intel” Was Based On Tortured Confessions - Torture KILLED Americans
We keep hearing these right-wing torture apologists
telling us how torture “worked and saved American lives”.
Just the opposite is true. It resulted in the
senseless deaths of thousands of Americans.
We have known (thanks to reports from former
Deputy Sec of State, Larry Wilkerson) for some time that key claims made by
the administration about contacts between Saddam and Al Qaeda were the
result of the torture of one Ibn Sheikh Al Libby, who was ”rendered”
to Syria and tortured during interrogation. Eventually, they put him
in a coffin-like “confinement box” for an extended period of time and
then beat him senseless when he was eventually taken out.
Suddenly, he answered “Yes” to the repeated
questions about the supposed contacts.
That information was a key argument put forth by
the administration during Colin Powell’s now infamous UN speech.

Powell Says Shrinking GOP Should Return To The Center
The Republican Party is in big trouble and needs
to find a way to move back to the middle of the country, former Secretary of
State Colin Powell said Monday.
Powell said the GOP is "getting smaller and
smaller" and "that's not good for the nation." He also said
he hopes that emerging GOP leaders, such as House Minority Whip Cantor, will
not keep repeating mantras of the far right.
"The Republican Party is in deep
trouble," Powell told corporate security executives at a conference in
Washington sponsored by Fortify Software Inc. The party must realize that
the country has changed, he said. "Americans do want to pay taxes for
services," he said. "Americans are looking for more government in
their life, not less."

Cheney, Gingrich, McCain: Old GOP Guard Appear On
Sunday Shows--1996? Or 2009?
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/05/10/exclusive-dnc-ad-hits-the_n_201376.html
Newt Gingrich, John McCain, and Dick Cheney
appeared as scheduled on Sunday's morning talk show circuit, unleashing a
torrent of attacks on President Obama and arguing that the Republican Party
should resist efforts to "moderate."
WATCH VIDEO:
Having marginalized themselves as the Party of No -
the GOP has nowhere else to turn but a generation of leaders whose ideas
and brand of politics have been thoroughly rejected," read an
accompanying statement by Communications Director Brad Woodhouse. "Anyone
watching television today would have to be excused for asking - is this
1996 or 2009?"
This truly is low-hanging fruit
for the DNC: a widely unpopular former vice president, failed presidential
candidate and highly controversial former House Speaker representing easy
targets. But the real story - and, for the GOP, problem - here is
the hard-to-overstate absence of leadership. Without a central figure or
institution to help guide the party's message - from the policy platform
to the television surrogates - the names and ideas that rise to the
surface will naturally be from the old guard. Michael Steele's rocky
tenure at the RNC hasn't filled that void.
Much of the problem is, of course,
self-inflicted. Cheney, after all, just this past week expressed his
desire to see the new wave of Republican leadership take its place in
high-profile roles. Then he went out and did a live interview for the full
half hour on "Face the Nation," in which he proclaimed Colin
Powell to no longer be a Republican.

'Party of Shrinkin' at this point." – Bill Maher

HUMOR-- Wanda Sykes: Rush Limbaugh was the '20th
hijacker'
"Mr. President . . . you've had your
fair share of critics. ... Rush Limbaugh, one of your big critics, boy —
Rush Limbaugh said he hopes this administration fails. So you’re saying,
‘I hope America fails.’ You’re like, ‘I don’t care about people
losing their homes, their jobs or our soldiers in Iraq.’ He just wants
our country to fail.
To me, that’s treason. He’s not saying anything differently than Osama
bin Laden is saying. You know you might want to look into this, sir,
because I think Rush Limbaugh was the 20th hijacker but he was just so
strung out on Oxycontin he missed his flight
“Too much?
“You’re laughing inside, I know you’re laughing.
“Rush Limbaugh — I hope the country fails. I hope his kidneys fail,
how about that?
“He needs a waterboarding, that’s what he needs.”
